Industry Merger and Acquisitions News The software industry is very volatile, with new players constantly emerging, others ceasing operations, and still others gobbling up smaller companies in an effort to increase market share. The industry is currently buzzing about the acquisition of Sibelius on August 2nd by Avid Technology, Inc., the makers of the Academy Award-winning video editing software of the same name, and the makers of the industry standard "Pro Tools" audio recording/editing software from their DigiDesign wing. Sibelius had heretofore been a privately owned firm based in Britain, founded by twin Finn brothers who sang in the King's College choir and graduated from Cambridge University. Avid also owns M-Audio, which produces keyboards, interfaces and hardware peripherals. They will very likely come up with new product combinations in the future that include sequencing, score-to-video, notation, and audio/video/notation output. Read more about this merger here. |
