Tip:
Instantly orchestrate a piano part, intelligently.
The
issue:
In most
notation software, the "explode" or "orchestrate"
function just separates a 4-part grand staff into 4 separate instruments
that play all the time. No human orchestrator would do this.
Solution:
In Sibelius, you can intelligently orchestrate a piano part, taking
into account such things as dynamics in the original passage. Sibelius
makes some intelligent instrumentation / orchestration decisions based
on what is present in the source material, much like a human orchestrator
would.
Play
in a piano part, or open a MIDI file piano part, or scan in a
piano part. Note the dynamic changes in this piano passage. Sibelius
will take this into account when orchestrating.

Triple-click
the staves that contain the existing music to select all of the
music, then select Copy from the Edit menu (or press CTRL+C).
|
| Create
a new score with the instruments for which you wish to orchestrate.
Select one measure of all the blank staves you wish Sibelius to
arrange into (Click the top staff, hold down SHIFT and click the
bottom staff to select all staves in between). |
 |
 |
Select
"Arrange" from the Notes menu. |
| Select
the instrumentation to arrange into from the Arrange Styles list.
Once you are comfortable with Sibelius, you can create your own
Arrange Styles for your own instruments. |
 |
 |
Sibelius
will orchestrate the original piano part into the staves you selected,
using your selected Arrange Style.
Notice
that at the point of the crescendo, Sibelius altered the orchestration,
bringing in some instruments that had been silent, and dropping
others out of the texture at that point, much like a human orchestrator
would. |
